Simple Woman's Daybook - April, May, and June 2017

I am participating in a Simple Woman's Daybook for April, May, and June 2017.

Outside my Window...it is presently a cool overcast day.  It is a great day to home-school.  I usually don't turn the fireplace on in April...but I did today for a little while.  I think we have global cooling in Maryland because it is June when I type this next sentence and it is still cooler than usual.

Finally, today: June 13th, we are having some sunny hot weather. A wonderful home-school father and his sons are putting in a new back deck for us.  I might have to give them some popsicles later to cool them off.

I am Thinking...that I hope the Lord guides the progress of my children.

Colin/26 - Receiving his Ph.D. in Engineering and this fall going to live with some Franciscan Monks in New York to help serve the homeless for a short period. He expressed that he does not want to become a priest nor has he given up on girls.  Therefore, we will see where the Holy Spirit leads him!

Brandyn/25 - Living at home to finish up his Nursing Degree at the local community college. Also working part time at University of Maryland in Baltimore Hospital.

Kristen/21 - Just transitioned from University of Maryland to Montgomery College to finish up her Nursing Degree.  She will be going on a mission trip this summer to Latin America and working as a lifeguard sub at the local pool.

Claire/17 - Attending University of Nebraska in the fall to begin her degree program in early childhood education.  We are currently attending her high school graduation celebrations.  She is on swim team and life guarding at the local pool for her summer job.

Patrick/10 - Continuing to finish up 5th grade home-school lessons and participate in swim team and soccer.

I am Thankful...for the deacon at our local parish as he communicated with my brother who has colon cancer to see if the Church can assist him in any way while he is getting treatment. That was in April.  Now it is June and they should offer him Prayers of the Sick sacrament.

I am also thankful that my fifth grader was able to speed up his completion of his fourth quarter home-school material. Now he is basically finishing up just reading and vocabulary.  He is working on a book report about Saint John Bosco by Catherine Beebe.  He said that he may choose this Saint for his Confirmation name. Right now he is outside at recess playing with a neighbor.

In the Kitchen...We had pork chops, mashed potatoes, and corn on the cob.  That was in April.  In June, Brandyn helped me make up my own seasoning for the pork chops.  It turned out very good.

Last night, June 12th, my hubby barbecued chicken and potatoes.  I love the way potatoes taste when they are barbecued. Although I didn't have dinner last night as my stomach did not feel so good.

I am Wearing...Black sweats with a blue tee and grey and pink jacket.  Cozy clothes to snuggle indoors on this rainy day.  That was in April.  Now (in June) I'm wearing black jeans, short sleeved blouse, black sweater, and flip flops. Today, June 13th, I'm in shorts as it is very hot today.

I am Creating...a simple craft to have for my journal writing class and a yummy dessert for the end of the year celebration for our home-school coop. That was in April.

In June, I am continuing to develop ideas for my journal writing class.

I am Looking Forward to...sunny and warm weather with the swim team starting up for our two youngest children and life guarding positions for my daughters.  The swim team pasta dinner is this Friday evening.  I am making Creamy Pesto-Chicken Casserole.

I am Hearing...three of my kids and the dog fooling around and playing in the background with hubby talking on the phone about college to my daughter at University of Maryland.  That was in April.

Now it is June and I was the first one up today.  It is 8:00 a.m. and I hear a couple others beginning to rise. Today, June 13th, I hear the men and boys working on the deck.

Around the House...In April, we finally cleared out much of the clutter in our basement, got new walls and new floor with some book shelves too.  It looks much better.  We will be getting a new air conditioning and new deck in June.

I am Praying...for my brother who has colon cancer. I am also praying for my mother who is very worried.  I am also praying for myself that I do not have any setbacks or recurring issues with my illness as I have recently. I am currently receiving some treatment. I am also praying for my oldest son who is over in Sweden for his career.

One of My Favorite Things...was celebrating Easter with the family and taking a weekend trip to Ocean City, Maryland.  That was April.  Now in June we are busy with Claire's graduation celebrations.  Here is a pic to share:

A Few Plans for Next Week...finish my craft for my journal writing class and turn in religious education registration to Mother Seton Parish.

Here are some recent pics to share of one of the graduation events my family attended for my daughter:

Simple Woman's Daybook - January 2017

I am participating in a Simple Woman's Daybook for January 2017.

Outside my Window...it is overcast with a slight breeze today and a bit cold.  Our dog cries when she sees our neighbor's dog running in her yard inside the electric fenced in area.  Our dog is put on a leash.  I've been asking my husband if we can get an electric fence for our back yard so that we can let Bella run around and get some exercise.  He thinks it is a waste of money.  Say some prayers that my husband will understand that our dog, Bella, needs to get exercise too.

I am Thinking...that this month will be a joyful month since all five of our children will be home with us.  I never get to see my oldest son who will soon have his Ph.D. in engineering.  His lease is up on his house and he will be staying with us during part of his last six months of research at college for his Ph.D.  I've been making him some chicken fried rice so that he has something healthy to eat when he gets hungry.  My second oldest son, who is a good cook, gave me the idea to cook with soy sauce.  It worked out quite well.  In fact, he is going to make dinner tonight for our family since he is on break from college.  Here is his meal:

Brandyn's yummy dinner

I was able to have lunch with my oldest daughter yesterday and she filled me in on all her friendships in college.  She met a nice boy recently and he sounds like a real sweetheart.  She just returned from a Focus Mission Trip to San Antonio.

My son and his girlfriend are so cute together.  Here they are working together to make sushi.  They have their college education to finish before they settle down together.  Please say a prayer so that their relationship continues to grow with the blessings of Christ.

Cute couple!

I am Thankful...for the relationships my children have established as siblings.  It is so good to see my youngest and oldest bond together as I know they are very good for each other...especially at this time.  My two daughters fill our home with tons of giggling and laughter.  It is wonderful to see their relationship develop.  My second oldest's girlfriend fits right in with them too.  I am also thankful for scouting for my son and husband.  Here is some recent pics:

Husband as cub master in same troop my father began years ago.

In the Kitchen...Last night I made pork chops, potatoes, and broccoli with cheese.  Tonight my son is cooking dinner.  We will all be pleasantly surprised.  This luxury can take place while he is on break from school.  He returns to college classes on the 25th of January.
My little scout!
I am Wearing...gray sweat pants and a black long sleeved shirt.

I am Creating...A craft for my journal writing homeschool class.

I am Looking Forward to...not having to go to the doctor because I'm not feeling well anymore.  I've been having a lot of fatigue and some shortness of breath that has greatly worried me.  I've been able to receive doctor reports that are positive about my health.  I'm taking vitamins, exercising more, and quitting unhealthy habits.  I hope to be healthier and have more energy to do things this year.

I am Hearing...my 5th grader, who is the last child homeschooled, do research on the thickness of ice and when it is safe to walk on it.  We have a pond behind our back yard and he threw a heavy stick on it to see if it would sink.  The pond is frozen.  We told him he can not go on it.  He is also talking to me about building a tree fort in our back yard.  He comes up with ideas between his subjects during the day all the time.

Around the House...We finally have a handy man coming to fix odd jobs we have to take care of around the house.  We need two new toilets, better lighting, closet doors, book shelves, new faucets, new sink basin, towel racks installed, t.v. mounted on wall, etc.  Also, we've been able to declutter a bit since my oldest moved back in for a short duration until he receives his Ph.D.

I am Praying...for my husband to find where the mice are getting in our house.  They get in our utensil drawers in the kitchen and leave their droppings everywhere.  Right now, all our knives, spoons, and forks are out of their drawers and on top of the counters.  It is a pain in the neck.

One of My Favorite Things...was being able to watch some football games together as a family this month.  We all seem to like the Green Bay Packers.  My oldest son has the same smile as Aaron Rodgers - their quarterback. My oldest son is the one who got our family hooked as official 'cheese heads.'

A Few Plans for Next Week...attend a wedding in Missouri with my husband.  Our good friend's son is getting married. Also, meet my friend at the local mall to walk together for some exercise.

Here is a recent pic to share of one January evening while watching a football game:

Simple Woman's Daybook (September)

I am participating in a Simple Woman's Daybook.

Outside my Window...it is going to go up to 94 today in Maryland according to this mornings weather report on WMAL.  It is currently pleasant in the morning as we just returned from walking our dog, Bella.  She attracted a couple of our neighbors' dogs.  It's so funny how she gets so excited when she first sees them at times...and...suddenly...a couple minutes later...she doesn't even know the other dogs are there.  Why is her "doggy world" like this?

I am Thinking...I am very concerned about my 24 year old son.  His heart is breaking as he just helped his girlfriend move three hours away to attend grad school.  His girlfriend is studying to be a physical therapist and they just tacked on three more years of study for this degree.  I do not see the need for this.  I think people (likely liberals) are specifically making it harder for young people to start families together.
Son and Girlfriend
I am Thankful...for the interview I had with a local Catholic school to possibly be a substitute teacher in the future.  In the meantime, I might be able to help with after school care.

In the Kitchen...We barbecued chicken last night and had mashed potatoes and fresh green beans.  I also made some yummy Buffalo Chicken Bites for our next tailgate at University of Maryland football games.

Dinner last night

Yummy Tailgate Food
I am Wearing...pink shorts, grey tee, and black flip flops.

I am Reading...My son's book on Thomas Becket with him.

I am Creating...Two crafts for two different journal classes I am teaching.

I am Looking Forward to...going to the Penn State game with Maryland in Pennsylvania with my hubby, other son, girlfriend, and her parents.  It will be the first time we meet her parents.  She is a beautiful girl my son met on CatholicMatch.com.  I've heard about 1/3 of couples are meeting online these days.
Son and Girlfriend
I am Hearing...the quiet in the house while my son is doing his religion. He studies three separate religion books, including the Catechism and Bible History.

Around the House...I just watched the ending of the "Lord of the Rings" with my 5th grader last night.  It was so good that I could hardly take my eyes off of what was going to happen next!

I am Praying...for my children and our country/military...always...always...always!

One of My Favorite Things...was seeing my 5th grader double up on some of his work this year so that he does not fall behind.

A Few Plans for Next Week...attend Back-To-School night at my daughter's Catholic school in Virginia.  I always look forward to meeting her teachers.

Simple Woman's Daybook - July

I am participating in a Simple Woman's Daybook.

Outside my Window...it was hot, bright, and sunny in Maryland today. Yesterday it was very hot at our last swim meat of the year.  It is nice that swim team is finally over as it gets too hectic towards the end of the season.  Nevertheless, my daughters still need to coach until divisionals and teach swim lessons.  Therefore, I'm still swamped with carpooling duties early in the morning.

I am Thinking...I am glad that I made a doctor appointment the other day because I haven't been feeling very good lately.  I get tired very easily and seem to be struggling with occasional allergies or sinus problems.

I am Thankful...for the programs in the Church for our youth.  My sons have been on numerous mission trips both inside and out of the country.  The Catholic Student Center at the University of Maryland has two wonderful priests there that have continued the work of strengthening our children in the faith.  One was able to come to the house for dinner this month.  What a refreshing friendly change from our stuffy pastor!

In the Kitchen...We barbecued burgers and pork chops on Monday and Tuesday.  Wednesday was the swim meat so everyone kind of ate left overs.  Tonight my daughter made a yummy chicken and pasta dish for us.

I am Wearing...black exercise shorts and colorful tee

I am Reading...How to be an Adult in Relationships: The Five Keys to Mindful Loving

I am Creating...Cookie recipes.  I wanted to give some to my neighbors but there are no nice cookie containers. I just used sandwich bags and attached a nice note.  My son and I will have to bring them to the neighbors together.

I am Looking Forward to...going to California for our nieces's wedding.

I am Hearing...the kids watching t.v. downstairs.  They were outside but apparently the mosquitoes are starting to attack.

Around the House...I straightened the girls room a little the other day as they are so busy with work, swim team, swim lessons, and coaching that there is little time for cleaning.  I also straightened my own closet out.

I am Praying...for my son Colin and his girlfriend Jordan.  They just met on Catholic Match.  She is a very sweet girl. Also, for Ted Cruz and his family.

One of My Favorite Things...helping Jordan cook for Colin at our house the other day and celebrating the 4th of July with some good friends. Here are some pics:

A Few Plans for Next Week...we are going to the Shrine of St. Anthony's and will complete a report on it for one of my son's 4th quarter homeschool assignments.

Here is a recent pic to share:  Crab Feast at the pool.  That's my hubby in the background.  He's a big flirt (in a good way) just like my dad was.

Easter 2016

It was so nice to have the whole family together on Easter.  I know it is hard for everyone to get together as my older children are so busy with college life.  My oldest is trying to get his Ph.D. in engineering.  He is taking a three week trip out West tomorrow.  Yet he still managed to come and spend the day with us.  It warms my heart just to see him for a little while.  My other son has a beautiful girlfriend.  He is taking college courses in nursing.  I hope they can get married some day.  My daughter is also enrolled in nursing courses.  Both of my daughters will be lifeguards at a local pool this summer.  My two youngest will be on the swim team while my oldest daughter will be an assistant coach for the team.  After Easter dinner, we all came together to pray the rosary.  It is so wonderful to have one's family be united in the Lord!  We all played basketball outside in the cul-de-sac after prayers.  Only I had to watch because my goofy leg was hurting.  I will have to go to the doctor to find out why it has been hurting for over a week.  I teach a dance and movement class at our homeschool coop too.  I need to be able to jump and move good too.  I hope that all of you have had a blessed Easter!  Be thankful that He is Risen and we can join Him in heaven for eternity!

Simple Woman's Daybook-August 19th, 2015

I'm participating in a Simple Woman's Day Book.

Outside my window...it is overcast here in Maryland today and the sun is finally trying to peak through the clouds.  It is overcast in my mind too. I am trying to teach my son how to be a good and respectful student/child when an adult is speaking to him.

I am thinking...that it will be a challenge to utilize Seton Homeschool for my fourth grader next year.  We will be attempting to follow their course materials, but I'm already having doubts about it with the way my son is behaving.

I am thankful...that we are not on welfare and stuck in the welfare trap.  Our welfare system has effectively set up roadblocks to the two main avenues for economic progress: marriage and employment.  The War on Poverty (Lyndon Johnson) has cost nearly $16 trillion since 1965, more than twice the cost of all U.S. military wars combined.

In the kitchen...I made stuffed peppers last night.  My husband and I enjoyed them as the kids were either at their girlfriend's house, at college, at work, ate too many cookies before dinner, or eating at a pizza place with a friend.

I am wearing...black and blue short set and top w/ flip flops.

I am creating...I have created the journal lesson plans and craft for tomorrows coop.  This is a big benefit today as I am tied up with teaching an important lesson at the moment.
I am going...nowhere.  I plan on saying the rosary at home with my son.

I am wondering...how I am going to break my son of feeling he is entitled to too many things.  Last night his little buddy and he squirted each other with the hose (not in their baithing suits but their play clothes) and got soaked head to foot.  Boys will be boys.

I am looking forward to... Teaching my son about the economy.

I am hearing...peace and quiet while my son is being disciplined with a time out in his bedroom and my daughters are at work.

Around the house...I have been decluttering little by little trying to purge old books and materials and make room for the new books and materials.  I also cleaned out the cars.

I am praying...for our homeschool year togther.  The beginning of the year always seems to have some hurdles to overcome.

One of my favorite things...was listening to the EWTN mass today with my son.  "Christ has bore the brunt of the days heat for us."  The reading of the vineyard owner:  "The last shall be first and the first shall be last."

A few plans for the rest of the week...is to have the NOL Journal Writing Coop and go for a Ladies Night Out.

Here is a recent picture to share of our 5 beautiful children at the beach.

Mid-Year Evaluation of Schedules

Here is Bella...the new puppy addition to our household.  I've put her picture here to cheer you up while I get into my analysis of my homeschool schedule.  She has been such a good puppy so far...even with all our 'puppy interruptions' to homeschooling.

Homeschoolers know that we have to be flexible for the demands of family life.  My schedule is designed for a week when we do not have to go anywhere.  We all know...this can not always happen with family life.  The puppy has pushed our subjects back a bit during our studies.  That is o.k. though because I've designed the schedule to end at around 2:30 pm.  We have a couple of hours to play when necessities like this occur in our schedule.  We will be sure to complete the basics, history, journal writing, and reading today...even with all our 'puppy distractions.'

I am attempting to begin 1/2 an hour earlier in our schedule than I had originally planned at the beginning of the year - changing from 9:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. - for our Pledge, Devotion, and Prayer.  This will ensure that we complete 3 to 4 subjects before lunch time.  Often we average between two and three subjects before lunch.  Once we say our daily prayers and devotions, we set the momentum to pursue our morning studies.

The fact that we MUST begin each day with the Pledge, Devotion, and Prayer lets us put our faith as the priority every day.  It is so rewarding to think of how Our Lord leads us before we begin work.  When I had all five or four (or even two) kids homeschooling, we would say a Morning Offering and save our prayers and devotion until the afternoon.  It was beneficial then as it strove us to conquer our math lessons and challenging subjects in the morning when we (I - ha ha) had the most energy.  Our family needed mornings for this and, we looked forward to a quiet and peaceful prayer time in the afternoons.  This also enabled the older kids to play after work while babies napped, cuddled with mom, or received my full attention.  Every family changes and modifies their approach as their families grow to meet the needs of all.  This is just how our homeschooling day has evolved over the years.

In the schedule below, you will note that we have the choice between two to three subjects at certain hours of the day.  This permits us to devote more time to the subjects that require extra planning or materials or choose the subject with the highest need at the time.  We have to plan and gather materials occasionally for projects in history or experiments in science.  We also need to make sure we've chosen good library books for NOL Journal Writing beforehand.  All these things take extra time.  Therefore, time for these subjects will attempt to be between 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 to 12:45 p.m. each day.

In reviewing the lessons for these three subjects, I may need extra materials to buy or books to borrow from the library.  Some days I will be able to devote this time to two of the subjects while I can purchase or gather the materials for the third subject in the evening for the following day.  It is important to know that these three subjects take the most time and planning and are scheduled during our most productive time to work with a lunch break in the middle of their execution.  Oftentimes, lessons are broken up during the week for these subjects:

1)  Science
2)  History
3)  NOL Journal Writing

Before accomplishing these three subjects, we will complete an important basic.  It has always been good for us to complete math lessons in the morning.  I think this comes from awful memories from my school days where it was hot and late in math class.  All I could do was think about the bell ringing to go home (I don't dare tell my kids this just in case they have math in the afternoons).  Therefore, I've devoted every day this year (M - F) from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. to complete math for my first grade son.  We will occasionally look at our extra religion lessons from CCD class or Faith and Life series during this time too.  It usually takes my son around 30 to 40 minutes to finish math lessons.  His speed somewhat increasing or decreasing at times.  This gives us a guarantee to fulfill time spent on an important basic every day.

I've just picked up a Christian Light Education (CLE) Math in January.  We complete a CLE lesson along with an MCP Math page (front and back).  We are in the last quarter of MCP Math and the beginning of the book for CLE Math.  This gives us the best of both worlds as the beginning of many math texts or workbooks are often filled with some review.  Patrick is still learning new skills and at the same time reviewing past concepts.  Both of these curriculums are in workbook form and are very user friendly for first graders.  Therefore, we are not conquering tons of challenging  textbook material in both curriculums at this age.  By third or fourth grade, he will be ready for Saxon Math.

Another important basic for Patrick to complete is English.  He has a simple workbook this year so may average around 20 minutes to complete this subject beginning around 11:15 a.m.  We've been spending more time with Journal writing this year, but I still want him to finish his workbook.  This is one reason I am re-evaluating our schedule in January...to ensure we cover everything we purchased at the beginning of the year.  It is just a matter of rearranging the initial schedule a bit to squeeze in the necessary time for subjects that have received less attention.

There are limited occasions when history, science, and/or journal writing get pushed into 'overtime.'  On these days, we will omit English and/or eat lunch a little later.  It all depends on the type of project or experiment we do that particular day.  There is about 1/3 of his English workbook to finish.  It may not be the same situation to make English so flexible in second or third grade because we start using the Voyages in English text and pick up Spelling.

Around 12:00 to 12:45 p.m. we will attempt to complete two out of three subjects.  They are:

1)  Catholic National Reader
2)  Library book w/ NOL Journal Writing (Sci or Hist)
3)  Religion: CCD Class / Faith and Life Series

Numbers 1) and 2) we will probably alternate between every day as they both always involve reading and writing (unless we need to finish up a project or experiment).  Notice that I can determine which subject requires the most time each week by choosing between two or three subjects at one designated time.  During some weeks, we have more religion because of the extended gathering time taken during our CCD or a longer project or experiment to conduct for completion.  NOL Journal Writing is always broken up and is easily manageable to fit in where needed.

Between 1:00 and 1:30 we will attempt to complete another two of three subjects.  The subjects are:

1)  Geography
2)  Phonics
3)  Handwriting

These subjects are all in workbook form.  We've saved the easiest subjects for the afternoon.

From 2:00 to 2:30 we will dedicate to reading good chapter books together.  We have 2 1/2 hours to fix dinner or catch up on loose ends.  This gives us flexibility if something gets started late or we want to venture out for some fun or an important errand.

Our schedule is below:

 8:30  -  9:00  ---  Pledge, Devotion, Prayer
 9:00  -  9:45  ---  CLE Math/MCP Math and or Religion
10:00 - 11:00 ---  History, Science, and/or NOL Journal Writing
11:15 - 11:30 ---  English
11:30 - 12:00 ---  Lunch
12:00 - 12:45 ---  CNR, NOL, (Sci or Hist), and Religion
  1:00 -   1:30 ---  Geography, Phonics, and/or Handwriting
  2:00 -   2:30 ---  Reading

This is my schedule in a perfect world.  Unfortunately, it is not a perfect world.  For example, the other day we were only able to complete three subjects because I had to pick my daughters up for 1/2 day of school, get two kids hair cuts, and bring Bella to the vet.  When I have a plan though, it helps me to have goals and objectives to strive for during certain periods of our day.  I wanted to document our plan here and share it with you if you can gain any insight from it for your own homeschooling.  I've been homeschooling for over twenty years now and it is helpful to learn from each other.  Keep in mind that I've only had to homeschool during the elementary and middle school years for my kids.  I credit this to the priority of their faith life and learning the virtues that come with proper actions and attitudes to doing their work.

5 Minute Friday: Cherished

I am joining 5 Minute Friday to type for five minutes on the word

Cherished.

Go...

Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska said, "God filled my soul with the interior light of a deeper knowledge of Him as Supreme Goodness and Supreme Beauty.  I came to know how very much God loves me.  Eternal is His love for me."  It appears that when we know God is all Good and all Beautiful, we can come to know God will love us forever!  Through our loving efforts in CHERISHING God, more of His graces will be sent to strengthen the bond and awareness that connects us to Him in relationship.

Afterwards, she felt a greater intimacy with God and said, "I felt so immensely happy; it seemed to me that I had stepped into the life of Paradise."  In order to feel part of 'heaven on earth,' does it help if one is thankful for God's Goodness and Beauty?  It seems to me that this may be so!  Then we can CHERISH our life on earth all the more!  Let's CHERISH our relationship with Our Father in heaven!

Stop.

T for Teaching Truth

I greatly admire many of the religious products for teaching children that most Christian faiths have created to help them follow the Lord.  Be careful though when you come across a story that does not make enough sense.  In any event, my six year old and I read from a wonderful devotion book for Christian children.  It contains nice stories with a bible verse to read each day.  We've thoroughly enjoyed the stories and verses...except when we got to todays.  We still enjoyed the story and verse but had to correct the mistake with the correct quote and explanation of the verse.  The story was a bit vague also and we needed to discuss the error here.  It is a good lesson to be able to search for the truth and to be aware of some things that may conflict with truth.  Anyway, here are the two bible verses we compared:

"He saved us, not because of the good things we did, but because of his mercy." (Titus 3:5)

and

"But when the kindness and generous love of God our Savior appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, he saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life." (Titus 4-7)

One verse appears to be saying God our Savior appeared because of his mercy and another verse appears to be saying God saved us because of his mercy.  One verse speaks of saving through baptism which is our movement toward the Savior.  It requires our work, deeds, and participation.  The other verse makes you think there is nothing you can do to gain eternal life...except, I guess, believe or something.  Just interesting to note the difference here.

Going to Mass: More Important than Your Birthday

Helping Children Appreciate the Mass

Does your family celebrate any special events/traditions together?  Our family celebrates birthdays and special holidays together.  Our family has made it a tradition to remember and celebrate these special events together.  Parents teach their children to understand which events in their lives are the most important.  For example, most parents consider their child's birthday a momentous occasion.  It gives me a happy feeling inside when my family and friends tribute me on my birthday.  They are showing me that they care about me when they have a special card or celebration for me on my birthday.  Human beings tribute each other on their birthdays or when something arises in their lives as being an important step in their growth as a virtuous person.  A child's birthday can signify that one has become a closer step to living a life as a responsible adult.  Responsibility and virtue are qualities that Jesus Christ displayed while he was on earth.  God loves people who try to be kind to others and lead a good life.  If people tribute each other for birthdays, how much more should we pay tribute to God, our Creator, for giving us this life we have on earth.  After all, we wouldn't be alive to celebrate birthdays if it wasn't for God's loving wisdom in creating us!  If birthdays are important to us, honoring and paying tribute to God at Mass should be much more important than having a birthday.

God gave us a set of laws to obey called the Ten Commandments.  The third commandment is to remember to keep holy the Sabbath day or remember to honor God at Mass on Sundays for the Catholic.  This commandment helps us to be responsible towards God and others which helps us to live virtuously if we want to be happy.  God sends us graces to help us live virtuously when we keep and follow His commandments.  Shouldn't paying tribute to God at Mass be just as natural and common as sending a birthday wish to a loved one or special friend?  Too many do not even attend Church on Sundays.  Why does it appear God is sometimes forgotten about in our world when people do not try to keep this important commandment?  The Mass is one of the most beautiful gifts God has given to us.  Going to Church is one of the most important traditions we can regularly practice if we want to be true to God and our discipleship.  God has told us this in the bible.  If we obey God's laws, go to Church, read the bible, and practice authentic discipleship; we will come to see more and more beauty at Mass and our world around us by putting God first in our lives.

The Birthday of Jesus

Do you ever wonder how Mary and Joseph celebrated the birthday of their son, Jesus, when he was a young boy?  Do you think they had any idea that one day people all over the world would honor Jesus on his birthday at Christmas?  Maybe or maybe not.  They did know one thing for sure.  Mary and Joseph knew that Jesus was the Son of God and promised Savior.

God chose Mary and Joseph because he trusted them with His only son and he was pleased with them as they honored and payed tribute to God by participating in the traditions of the chosen people (including the Ten Commandments) and reading scripture.  No one else really knew that Jesus was God's Chosen One like Mary and Joseph did while he was a young boy, unless it was revealed to them by God.  I can think of a few people, such as, the three wise men, the shepherds, Elizabeth, and Simeon at Christs' presentation who were knowledgeable that Christ was the Son of God because God revealed it to them.

Most other people had to wait until Christ grew up and began his public ministry to believe He was the Son of God and learn the value of discipleship.  We are so stubborn that many people did not believe until Christ died and rose from the dead.  Christ knew He would have to suffer to pull people to Him.  We, as human beings, did not understand this fully and He had to teach us and show us by example so that we may all be able to believe.  His entire life shows us how much God loves us.  We should do everything we can to learn about Jesus so that we can live the way of the Cross and never forget the lessons he taught us.  Going to Mass is one of the best ways to live out true discipleship.

We remember special events in Jesus' life when we go to Mass to receive the Eucharist and hear God's Word.  Remembering these events at the Mass and in our daily routines will enhance and improve our Faith in Jesus as our one true Savior.  We should remember to go to Mass just like we remember our birthdays.  Would you forget your birthday?  God would never forget the day you were born and that He gave you life. Therefore, we should remember to keep God's special day holy.  We should not ever feel like we're missing something when we to to Church.  There is nothing more kind and important we can do for Christ, ourselves, and even our world.  We should never feel that we are wasting our  time in talking and learning about Christ (as some want us to believe).

We know Jesus did come and live and die for us.  He grew up like every child does and the Church provides us with many holy traditions to remember how Christ was revealed to us.  The Church provides us with His true identity.  The truth about Christ will bring us happiness.  Keeping God's commandments, like going to Church, helps us realize that life is the most valuable gift from God.  Celebrating the gift of life is honored in the Church Christ gave us.  What can be more important or blessed than the very life we have now?  All life is indeed holy and a blessing from God and we should encourage each other to rejoice about life.  Similar to the way families rejoice in each others birthdays.  Rejoicing about life should be just as natural as wishing someone happy birthday.  We shouldn't wonder about whether or not we should attend the Mass instituted by Christ for believers.  We don't wonder about wishing someone happy birthday...and this isn't even a law.  We should know how important Mass is for us.

A Tradition for Life

Therefore, celebrating any of the traditional events with the Church should be more common than celebrating a birthday wish with a loved one.  After all, it is the third commandment.  Every week we should come to the Lord with praise.  Too often our society pushes God aside when He should be the very center of our lives.  We can use the tradition of a birthday celebration to help us to understand that we should thank God for giving us this gift of life.  A birthday is remembering the day we were born and took our first breath of air.

Jesus may have been too poor for an expensive birthday party, but He was rich in spirit.  He is the finest example to us in leading a good and virtuous life.  We do have a reason to celebrate our life in Christ.  This is one of the reasons we celebrate at the holy sacrifice of the Mass every week.  Each time we go to Mass, we acknowledge how valuable life is in this world.  Life is extremely valuable and God wants us to praise Him for giving us our life.  In fact, anything we encounter in life that is good we can acknowledge before God and men and thank God for it.  What could be more important than the love God has for us.  Let's return that love to Him by going to Mass.  We make Jesus feel special when we go to Mass, just as you feel special on your birthday when others have kind greetings for you.

Traditions can include activities people perform during a birthday celebration or at the Mass.  It is good when families get together to acknowledge an individual on their birthday as a tradition.  It is a noble act when we get together to acknowledge Jesus at the Mass as a tradition (and law).  Today, many birthday traditions can include eating cake, opening presents, and playing games.  Traditions at Mass include bringing up gifts of bread and wine, reading the bible, and going to communion.  There is no law that says we have to perform traditional birthday activities.  Although, it sure gives someone a happy feeling when friends and family spend time to participate in these activities.  Nevertheless, there is a law that says we should attend Church on the Sabbath.  It is God's law.  People show the individual or Jesus how special they are whether at a birthday or at Church.  Friends and family enjoy each others company at a birthday and want to make the individual happy on their special day.  People who go to Church regularly want to make Jesus happy by remembering the day of His Passion.  Remember, a birthday can be acknowledged or conducted in many different ways.  A Mass is a sacred event that must be conducted under the authority of the Pope who Christ set up to lead our Church. Oftentimes, adults do not always have a birthday party but send birthday cards to each other or make a special phone call if they can't be together.  These are also very special ways to acknowledge an individual's birthday.  We can not call Jesus on the phone, but we can pray to Him...which is even easier.  Nevertheless, Jesus is always honored at the Mass the same way.  The only parts of the Mass that may change from week to week are the readings, homily, and songs.  It usually follows the same basic format for worship.  The Mass is a holy gift from the Lord that is far more important than anyone's birthday party.

Remember, the Church permits us to perform a noble attempt at salvation, not just a profitable one.  We should try to use all the resources God has provided us to enable us to be with Jesus in heaven one day.  If someone is noble, the person acts in a way that is idealistic and considerate.  It means the best way possible.  We should participate in the life of the Church.  A noble attempt at salvation does not only save us but enables us to share in more the the divine graces so graciously poured out to us from God.  These graces make us more beautiful in the eyes of God.  Therefore, He will pull us closer to Him.  Just as a father hugs a child when he or she does something good.  Wouldn't it be nice to be hugged by God?  Heaven must feel like a birthday every day!

Increasing Value

Friends and family who choose to participate in an individual's birthday celebration or give them a kind card send a message that says, "LET'S INCREASE THE VALUE OR WORTH OF OUR RELATIONSHIP."  A relationship is the connection existing between two or more people.  The most important relationships we have are with God and our family.  We also have a relationship with our friends.  Increasing the value of our relationships happen when people spend quality time together or do kind acts for one another.  Obeying our parents is another way to increase the relationship with our parents.  It is also one of God's laws as the fourth commandment.  When we spend time being kind to a person, whether with our parents, or at a birthday party, or at Church, we can build up and improve our relationship with them and God.

Jesus taught us to be kind to one another.  Remember, Jesus said, "What you did to the least of my brothers you did for me."  It is wise to be kind and virtuous in our relationships.  The way we treat someone on his or her birthday, or any day for that matter, is far more important than eating cake or getting presents.  Friendship and family relationships are the more important gifts we receive than the ones we open.  God also gives us gifts when we go to Mass to honor Him and keep His commandments.  If we want to receive the gift of God's grace, we must keep His commandments and honor Him.

Once we reach a certain age, we should realize that the days of having a birthday just because we want to receive gifts is over.  Now that we are older, we begin to know the real treasure lies in the time spent towards building up the relationship with a friend.  Just as going to Mass and praying regularly builds up our relationship with God.  Birthday traditions have been celebrated for years and years and to this day remain to be a special event in an individual's life.  Well, so too have the traditions existed in the Church, and we build up our relationship with God when we choose to follow his commandments.

Keeping the commandments exist in the Church Christ founded for a reason.  While there is no law that says we need to participate in birthday traditions (yet we choose to out of the goodness of our hearts), there is a law stating that we should participate in keeping the commandments.  It is God's law.  The third commandment, written by God and given to Moses on Mount Sinai, is to keep holy the Sabbath.  Going to weekly Mass is a way to honor and thank God for all that we have in life.  The Church, through the saving power of Jesus, permits us to more fully receive and respond to God's very love here on earth.  Why we even remember the last supper at every Mass.  The last supper is truly the most important meal that ever took place on earth.  This was the meal Christ had with his disciples just before he was put to death on the Cross.  Every time we kneel before God and receive Jesus in holy communion, we tell him that we believe in Him, are thankful for Him, and want to follow Him.  Jesus listens when we pray.  It must make Him feel very special when we come to Him.  Even more special than friends and family can make you feel on your birthday because it is a personal choice which fosters our growth in discipleship.

Participation is a Wise Choice

People who chose to participate in the life of the Church can send a message to God that says, "LET'S INCREASE THE VALUE OR WORTH OF OUR RELATIONSHIP."  Does this sound familiar?  It should.  Similar to when one devotes time to an individual on their birthday.  It is even more important to spend time with God because, through prayer and worship, God will provide us what we need and comfort us in times of trouble.  Remember, we must love God with all our heart, soul, and minds as the first three commandments tell us.  Our friends can't provide us with what God can provide us with here on earth.  Time with God is a sacred event.  We should try to devote time with God every day.  Praying to God can also enhance or improve our ability to live for, work for, and build up God's law of Love.  We actually become members of God's loving family when we keep His commandments.  We do not become members of a friends family by celebrating their birthday.  How much more important is it to honor God?  We should always remember to honor God at Church and be eager to go to Mass...as eager as we are to go to a friends birthday celebration.

We enhance our relationships with others and with God by choosing to participate in meaningful traditions and spending time together.  Devoting time to God in prayer or at Mass strengthens our relationship with Christ.  God doesn't ask for too much time.  Spending an hour at Mass and holy days, saying our prayers daily, participating in the sacraments, and helping our neighbors are important.  Honoring and acting upon the holy traditions and biblical truths gives us the wisdom and intelligence to do what is right and good.  The bible is read at every Mass.  Everyone should try to read the bible as often as possible.  The bible not only shows us how God loves and protects us but also helps us to understand why certain things happen in our world that we might not otherwise understand.

The message of Christ is to love God and one another.  Too often, people attend Mass in search of belonging to a community rather than sharing in the teachings, sufferings, and glory of Christ.  We can actually offer ourselves to Christ at Mass.  Community is important...but that is not what it is all about.  Some people may be in search of something like a big birthday party.  The Mass is more than a birthday party.  It is more than a big social event.  Why do some children place a birthday party as being more important than attending Mass?  We must really learn to love and understand Jesus and appreciate the Mass.  We can do this through prayer, reading the Bible, and understanding our Catechism to strengthen our faith in Christ.  Remember, the Church should be a priority in our lives.  It is the best place to spend time with and honor our Creator.
