Simple Woman's Daybook - January 2017

I am participating in a Simple Woman's Daybook for January 2017.

Outside my Window...it is overcast with a slight breeze today and a bit cold.  Our dog cries when she sees our neighbor's dog running in her yard inside the electric fenced in area.  Our dog is put on a leash.  I've been asking my husband if we can get an electric fence for our back yard so that we can let Bella run around and get some exercise.  He thinks it is a waste of money.  Say some prayers that my husband will understand that our dog, Bella, needs to get exercise too.

I am Thinking...that this month will be a joyful month since all five of our children will be home with us.  I never get to see my oldest son who will soon have his Ph.D. in engineering.  His lease is up on his house and he will be staying with us during part of his last six months of research at college for his Ph.D.  I've been making him some chicken fried rice so that he has something healthy to eat when he gets hungry.  My second oldest son, who is a good cook, gave me the idea to cook with soy sauce.  It worked out quite well.  In fact, he is going to make dinner tonight for our family since he is on break from college.  Here is his meal:

Brandyn's yummy dinner

I was able to have lunch with my oldest daughter yesterday and she filled me in on all her friendships in college.  She met a nice boy recently and he sounds like a real sweetheart.  She just returned from a Focus Mission Trip to San Antonio.

My son and his girlfriend are so cute together.  Here they are working together to make sushi.  They have their college education to finish before they settle down together.  Please say a prayer so that their relationship continues to grow with the blessings of Christ.

Cute couple!

I am Thankful...for the relationships my children have established as siblings.  It is so good to see my youngest and oldest bond together as I know they are very good for each other...especially at this time.  My two daughters fill our home with tons of giggling and laughter.  It is wonderful to see their relationship develop.  My second oldest's girlfriend fits right in with them too.  I am also thankful for scouting for my son and husband.  Here is some recent pics:

Husband as cub master in same troop my father began years ago.

In the Kitchen...Last night I made pork chops, potatoes, and broccoli with cheese.  Tonight my son is cooking dinner.  We will all be pleasantly surprised.  This luxury can take place while he is on break from school.  He returns to college classes on the 25th of January.
My little scout!
I am Wearing...gray sweat pants and a black long sleeved shirt.

I am Creating...A craft for my journal writing homeschool class.

I am Looking Forward to...not having to go to the doctor because I'm not feeling well anymore.  I've been having a lot of fatigue and some shortness of breath that has greatly worried me.  I've been able to receive doctor reports that are positive about my health.  I'm taking vitamins, exercising more, and quitting unhealthy habits.  I hope to be healthier and have more energy to do things this year.

I am Hearing...my 5th grader, who is the last child homeschooled, do research on the thickness of ice and when it is safe to walk on it.  We have a pond behind our back yard and he threw a heavy stick on it to see if it would sink.  The pond is frozen.  We told him he can not go on it.  He is also talking to me about building a tree fort in our back yard.  He comes up with ideas between his subjects during the day all the time.

Around the House...We finally have a handy man coming to fix odd jobs we have to take care of around the house.  We need two new toilets, better lighting, closet doors, book shelves, new faucets, new sink basin, towel racks installed, t.v. mounted on wall, etc.  Also, we've been able to declutter a bit since my oldest moved back in for a short duration until he receives his Ph.D.

I am Praying...for my husband to find where the mice are getting in our house.  They get in our utensil drawers in the kitchen and leave their droppings everywhere.  Right now, all our knives, spoons, and forks are out of their drawers and on top of the counters.  It is a pain in the neck.

One of My Favorite Things...was being able to watch some football games together as a family this month.  We all seem to like the Green Bay Packers.  My oldest son has the same smile as Aaron Rodgers - their quarterback. My oldest son is the one who got our family hooked as official 'cheese heads.'

A Few Plans for Next Week...attend a wedding in Missouri with my husband.  Our good friend's son is getting married. Also, meet my friend at the local mall to walk together for some exercise.

Here is a recent pic to share of one January evening while watching a football game:

Simple Woman's Daybook - October

I am participating in a Simple Woman's Daybook for October.

Outside my Window...as soon as the first day of October rolled around in Maryland, the temperature dropped and we had some rainy weather. It feels a bit more like autumn suddenly.  The temperature must be in the 60's or 70's rather than the 80's or 90's as it was most of September.  The other day it was a beautiful sunny day though...a bit of Indian Summer coming through (just for a few days) in the 80's for a high. Today was beautiful too:  cooler in the 60's with a strong cool wind, bright blue sky, and puffy white clouds!

I am Thinking...that the month started out a bit rocky in terms of my PTSD but seems to be more under control now.  My daughter did very good visiting three colleges last week:  University of Maryland, Catholic University, and James Madison University.  She is a senior in high school and she is handling the stress of college visits very well.  She is not sure what college is her favorite yet. She visited others as well in neighboring states.  I drove her to a friends party tonight in Virginia.

I am Thankful...for the two coops that my son is in.  One is close to home and the moms and families are all very nice.  He is taking history, science, art, and choir.   Even though he is doubling up on his history and science, he seems to be enjoying his curriculum.  The other is further away and we attend coop less often (There are only 8 classes as opposed to 16 classes this fall semester).  I teach one class and it is going very well.  I'm teaching kindergarten journal writing.

I am also thankful that we found a great used car for my other daughter in college.  She won't have it on campus yet but when she comes home she will be able to use her own car.  She is ecstatic!

In the Kitchen...I made Spicy Buffalo Chicken Bites for the last Maryland football game we attended at the beginning of the month.  I've been making Ruebin Roll-Ups and freezing them in preparation for the next game.  I'll have spicy and horse radish mustard with them.  Here are some pics from the last game.

My son is a ham! Just kidding!

I am Wearing...black sweats, a blue tee, and a grey and pink jacket.

I am Reading...I have seven books I'm busy with:  1) Out From Under: The Impact of Homosexual Parenting by Dawn Stefanowicz; 2) Uninvited: Living Loved When You Feel Less Than, Left Out, and Lonely by Lysa TerKeurst; 3) How to be an Adult in Relationships: The Five Keys to Mindful Loving by David Richo - I'm reading with my hubby; 4) My son's book I'm helping him with a book report - If All the Swords in England: A Story of Thomas Beckett by Barbara Willard; 5) The Power of a Praying Parent by Stormie Omartian; 6) The Catholic Controversy - A Defense of the Faith by St. Francis De Sales; and continuously a daily devotional to keep me away from vice - 7) Imitation of Mary by Alexander De Rouville

I am Creating...Two potential crafts:  One for my home journal class and the other for my coop journal class. I am also having a flyer made for my class.

I am Looking Forward to...I looked forward to celebrating our 30th anniversary this month. We spent the sunny day hiking Sugarloaf Mountain, drinking wine on the way down, and going out to dinner.  Here is some pics:

I am Hearing...the educational channel my son was watching.  He is restricted from watching too much junk t.v.

Around the House...I have to finish organizing some of my clothes in the bedroom.  I bought baskets to organize outfits on my shelves. I also did a major clean up in my son's bedroom with him today!  Hallelujah!

I am Praying...for our country and for babies in the womb.

One of My Favorite Things...was having my son in an Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) class this year.  He is doing very well.  It is nice to develop numerous ways to write instead of just one way.  Therefore, any new exposures are beneficial for him.

A Few Plans for Next Week...attend my son's evaluation to place him on an Upward basketball team.

Here is a recent pic to share of my daughter and I at the University of Maryland game:

Simple Woman's Daybook (September)

I am participating in a Simple Woman's Daybook.

Outside my Window...it is going to go up to 94 today in Maryland according to this mornings weather report on WMAL.  It is currently pleasant in the morning as we just returned from walking our dog, Bella.  She attracted a couple of our neighbors' dogs.  It's so funny how she gets so excited when she first sees them at times...and...suddenly...a couple minutes later...she doesn't even know the other dogs are there.  Why is her "doggy world" like this?

I am Thinking...I am very concerned about my 24 year old son.  His heart is breaking as he just helped his girlfriend move three hours away to attend grad school.  His girlfriend is studying to be a physical therapist and they just tacked on three more years of study for this degree.  I do not see the need for this.  I think people (likely liberals) are specifically making it harder for young people to start families together.
Son and Girlfriend
I am Thankful...for the interview I had with a local Catholic school to possibly be a substitute teacher in the future.  In the meantime, I might be able to help with after school care.

In the Kitchen...We barbecued chicken last night and had mashed potatoes and fresh green beans.  I also made some yummy Buffalo Chicken Bites for our next tailgate at University of Maryland football games.

Dinner last night

Yummy Tailgate Food
I am Wearing...pink shorts, grey tee, and black flip flops.

I am Reading...My son's book on Thomas Becket with him.

I am Creating...Two crafts for two different journal classes I am teaching.

I am Looking Forward to...going to the Penn State game with Maryland in Pennsylvania with my hubby, other son, girlfriend, and her parents.  It will be the first time we meet her parents.  She is a beautiful girl my son met on CatholicMatch.com.  I've heard about 1/3 of couples are meeting online these days.
Son and Girlfriend
I am Hearing...the quiet in the house while my son is doing his religion. He studies three separate religion books, including the Catechism and Bible History.

Around the House...I just watched the ending of the "Lord of the Rings" with my 5th grader last night.  It was so good that I could hardly take my eyes off of what was going to happen next!

I am Praying...for my children and our country/military...always...always...always!

One of My Favorite Things...was seeing my 5th grader double up on some of his work this year so that he does not fall behind.

A Few Plans for Next Week...attend Back-To-School night at my daughter's Catholic school in Virginia.  I always look forward to meeting her teachers.

Simple Woman's Daybook - April 13, 2016 - April 14, 2016

I am participating in a Simple Woman's Daybook:

Outside my window...it was a bright sunny day today and yesterday in Maryland.  It is finally warming up a bit but is still too cool for me.  It is often cool lately for this time in our state...in the 50's or low 60's.  It is more often in the 70's during April in Maryland.

I am thinking...that I am grateful for the Bible study my hubby and I are attending at our parish.  Some of the questions were:

1)  Identify people and events that God used to help you come to faith in Jesus.

The constant love between my own mother and father greatly greatly assisted me in falling in love with the Lord.

Also, when I broke up with my first serious boyfriend, I finally realized how important family was to me.

After I was assaulted in a woman's restroom, I turned to the Lord more often.

Each of these situations played a huge role in fostering my faith life.

2)  Who cultivated your curiosity?

My religious education classes taught me a lot about Jesus, the Mass drew me in, my parents constant love, and the suffering after the assault all cultivated my curiosity or planted seeds w/in me to explore further into His love. Both words, actions, suffering and His very presence drew me closer to the Lord.

3)  Who explained the Gospel?

My religious education teachers taught me the parables and sacraments while my parents taught me through virtuous actions and living.

4)  Who invited you to make a personal decision to accept Christ into your life?

It was never a choice.  Christ was always present, and I ran to him.  I've accepted the Lord from the beginning.

I am thankful...that I was able to hold the Journal Writing Class at my house today.  The boys had so much fun.  It was a beautiful day and they were able to play outside often.  I am also grateful that my leg stopped hurting.

In the kitchen...We are having shish kabobs tonight.

I am wearing...a pair of blue warm ups with a grey jacket.

I am creating...I finished my craft and chose some Bible verses for my Journal Writing Class Thursday.  I also chose some books for the Journal Writing Class I'm teaching at our homeschool coop next year too.  I sent out the song with sign language we are going to learn and asked the moms to do a summer prerequisite for the class.  They are to teach their children what the word VIRTUE means, point out examples, and practice the song occasionally.  Friday I am looking at a closer coop to home which means we might do both coops as the one I'm in now only meets every other week and is 50 minutes away.  Here is my Virtue Song:

Virtue Song
(Tune:  Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush)

Help Me See the Virtue
The Virtue
The Virtue
Help Me See the Virtue
In the World Around Me

Help Me Have the Wisdom
The Wisdom
The Wisdom
Help Me have the Wisdom
In Decisions I Make

Help Me Seek the Knowledge
The Knowledge
The Knowledge
Help Me Seek the Knowledge
In People that I Trust

Anchor Thoughts bring Joy
Bring Joy
Bring Joy
Anchor Thoughts bring Joy
To Everyone I Meet

I am going... to check out another coop tomorrow that is closer to home.  They offer History, Science, Art/Music, and IEW course.  It sounds great.  They meet once a week.
I am wondering...how my daughter will enjoy her junior prom tomorrow night.  She is double dating with a friend. I picked her dress up from the cleaners today as it needed to be hemmed.

I am looking forward to... picking up my dog, Bella, from the vet later today.  When I woke up, I noticed a big stain of blood on our white couch.  She kept licking as though she were swallowing the blood.  The vet said, "she had a 3.5 leison under the right side of her tongue and her tooth was loose.  The tooth had to be extracted and she needed stitches.  Nobody knows what she did to herself.

I am hearing...my two sons and I clicking away on computers.

Around the house...I need to organize better.

I am praying...for Ted Cruz and his family.

One of my favorite things...teaching my son how to write and communicate.

A few plans for the rest of the week...is to visit the new coop, get my nails done with my daughter, drive my daughter to her friend's house on prom night and take pictures, pick up my dog, and continue to pray for the list of people I wrote down on paper.  It helps me to remember when it is written down.

First homeschooler to graduate college!

What a joy yesterday to see my oldest son graduate from the University of Maryland with honors!  He will be working on his funded research paper to be published over the summer while holding onto an internship that he has had for over a year in the Engineering field.  Next year he will be going to grad school at University of Maryland.

We are so proud of him and I can't help but keep having visions while he walks up on stage to get his degree of Colin as a baby.  I don't believe how proud and happy he has made my husband and I feel.  I believe a large part of his success comes from his love for the Faith!!

I still homeschool my first grader and we still have prayer, bible, and devotion every morning...about 30 minutes worth of Faith strengthening.  It has been central to our quest to grow in truth and love!!

Please always know, even when times are rough and the kids are pulling you in ten different directions...you can stop for an instant and let God's Word mold your hearts to be invigorated to work towards virtue!  Always turn to the Lord in your homeschooling efforts and He will see you through!

If you would like to get a few ideas on keeping the Faith alive and well in your homeschooling endeavors...please join and glance at my website at http://nucleusoflife.com/.  I don't know how to manage it real well yet but it is fun to try.  I would love to have more members though.  I also have a Meetup group at http://www.meetup.com/nucleusoflife-com/.  Feel free to join and look around.

Here are some more pics from his graduation:

Mid-Year Evaluation of Schedules

Here is Bella...the new puppy addition to our household.  I've put her picture here to cheer you up while I get into my analysis of my homeschool schedule.  She has been such a good puppy so far...even with all our 'puppy interruptions' to homeschooling.

Homeschoolers know that we have to be flexible for the demands of family life.  My schedule is designed for a week when we do not have to go anywhere.  We all know...this can not always happen with family life.  The puppy has pushed our subjects back a bit during our studies.  That is o.k. though because I've designed the schedule to end at around 2:30 pm.  We have a couple of hours to play when necessities like this occur in our schedule.  We will be sure to complete the basics, history, journal writing, and reading today...even with all our 'puppy distractions.'

I am attempting to begin 1/2 an hour earlier in our schedule than I had originally planned at the beginning of the year - changing from 9:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. - for our Pledge, Devotion, and Prayer.  This will ensure that we complete 3 to 4 subjects before lunch time.  Often we average between two and three subjects before lunch.  Once we say our daily prayers and devotions, we set the momentum to pursue our morning studies.

The fact that we MUST begin each day with the Pledge, Devotion, and Prayer lets us put our faith as the priority every day.  It is so rewarding to think of how Our Lord leads us before we begin work.  When I had all five or four (or even two) kids homeschooling, we would say a Morning Offering and save our prayers and devotion until the afternoon.  It was beneficial then as it strove us to conquer our math lessons and challenging subjects in the morning when we (I - ha ha) had the most energy.  Our family needed mornings for this and, we looked forward to a quiet and peaceful prayer time in the afternoons.  This also enabled the older kids to play after work while babies napped, cuddled with mom, or received my full attention.  Every family changes and modifies their approach as their families grow to meet the needs of all.  This is just how our homeschooling day has evolved over the years.

In the schedule below, you will note that we have the choice between two to three subjects at certain hours of the day.  This permits us to devote more time to the subjects that require extra planning or materials or choose the subject with the highest need at the time.  We have to plan and gather materials occasionally for projects in history or experiments in science.  We also need to make sure we've chosen good library books for NOL Journal Writing beforehand.  All these things take extra time.  Therefore, time for these subjects will attempt to be between 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 to 12:45 p.m. each day.

In reviewing the lessons for these three subjects, I may need extra materials to buy or books to borrow from the library.  Some days I will be able to devote this time to two of the subjects while I can purchase or gather the materials for the third subject in the evening for the following day.  It is important to know that these three subjects take the most time and planning and are scheduled during our most productive time to work with a lunch break in the middle of their execution.  Oftentimes, lessons are broken up during the week for these subjects:

1)  Science
2)  History
3)  NOL Journal Writing

Before accomplishing these three subjects, we will complete an important basic.  It has always been good for us to complete math lessons in the morning.  I think this comes from awful memories from my school days where it was hot and late in math class.  All I could do was think about the bell ringing to go home (I don't dare tell my kids this just in case they have math in the afternoons).  Therefore, I've devoted every day this year (M - F) from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. to complete math for my first grade son.  We will occasionally look at our extra religion lessons from CCD class or Faith and Life series during this time too.  It usually takes my son around 30 to 40 minutes to finish math lessons.  His speed somewhat increasing or decreasing at times.  This gives us a guarantee to fulfill time spent on an important basic every day.

I've just picked up a Christian Light Education (CLE) Math in January.  We complete a CLE lesson along with an MCP Math page (front and back).  We are in the last quarter of MCP Math and the beginning of the book for CLE Math.  This gives us the best of both worlds as the beginning of many math texts or workbooks are often filled with some review.  Patrick is still learning new skills and at the same time reviewing past concepts.  Both of these curriculums are in workbook form and are very user friendly for first graders.  Therefore, we are not conquering tons of challenging  textbook material in both curriculums at this age.  By third or fourth grade, he will be ready for Saxon Math.

Another important basic for Patrick to complete is English.  He has a simple workbook this year so may average around 20 minutes to complete this subject beginning around 11:15 a.m.  We've been spending more time with Journal writing this year, but I still want him to finish his workbook.  This is one reason I am re-evaluating our schedule in January...to ensure we cover everything we purchased at the beginning of the year.  It is just a matter of rearranging the initial schedule a bit to squeeze in the necessary time for subjects that have received less attention.

There are limited occasions when history, science, and/or journal writing get pushed into 'overtime.'  On these days, we will omit English and/or eat lunch a little later.  It all depends on the type of project or experiment we do that particular day.  There is about 1/3 of his English workbook to finish.  It may not be the same situation to make English so flexible in second or third grade because we start using the Voyages in English text and pick up Spelling.

Around 12:00 to 12:45 p.m. we will attempt to complete two out of three subjects.  They are:

1)  Catholic National Reader
2)  Library book w/ NOL Journal Writing (Sci or Hist)
3)  Religion: CCD Class / Faith and Life Series

Numbers 1) and 2) we will probably alternate between every day as they both always involve reading and writing (unless we need to finish up a project or experiment).  Notice that I can determine which subject requires the most time each week by choosing between two or three subjects at one designated time.  During some weeks, we have more religion because of the extended gathering time taken during our CCD or a longer project or experiment to conduct for completion.  NOL Journal Writing is always broken up and is easily manageable to fit in where needed.

Between 1:00 and 1:30 we will attempt to complete another two of three subjects.  The subjects are:

1)  Geography
2)  Phonics
3)  Handwriting

These subjects are all in workbook form.  We've saved the easiest subjects for the afternoon.

From 2:00 to 2:30 we will dedicate to reading good chapter books together.  We have 2 1/2 hours to fix dinner or catch up on loose ends.  This gives us flexibility if something gets started late or we want to venture out for some fun or an important errand.

Our schedule is below:

 8:30  -  9:00  ---  Pledge, Devotion, Prayer
 9:00  -  9:45  ---  CLE Math/MCP Math and or Religion
10:00 - 11:00 ---  History, Science, and/or NOL Journal Writing
11:15 - 11:30 ---  English
11:30 - 12:00 ---  Lunch
12:00 - 12:45 ---  CNR, NOL, (Sci or Hist), and Religion
  1:00 -   1:30 ---  Geography, Phonics, and/or Handwriting
  2:00 -   2:30 ---  Reading

This is my schedule in a perfect world.  Unfortunately, it is not a perfect world.  For example, the other day we were only able to complete three subjects because I had to pick my daughters up for 1/2 day of school, get two kids hair cuts, and bring Bella to the vet.  When I have a plan though, it helps me to have goals and objectives to strive for during certain periods of our day.  I wanted to document our plan here and share it with you if you can gain any insight from it for your own homeschooling.  I've been homeschooling for over twenty years now and it is helpful to learn from each other.  Keep in mind that I've only had to homeschool during the elementary and middle school years for my kids.  I credit this to the priority of their faith life and learning the virtues that come with proper actions and attitudes to doing their work.

Homeschool Mom

Homeschooling has been such a blessing to our family of five children. It has enabled our children to strengthen and practice their faith in the peace and solitude of our home. The older children have been welcomed into healthy community settings that further their spritual and academic growth and development. They have all shown actions that point to good-hearted evangelization in their friendships. Their choice of friends shows that they all have a desire to bring like-minded Christians with them on the path towards virtuous pursuits. God and family have become the center of all of our activities. I can't help but be eager for what the future holds for my children.
