Eileen is Grateful

It is with great joy that I can share some of the things I'm thankful for to include in Judy's meme at her Thankful Woman's Blog.  It has been hard for me to participate lately because I've been extremely busy and find myself getting very tired often.  I've had to rest during the day when I get the chance so that I can tackle the next task successfully.  I hope you can have patience with me as I join the conversation periodically when possible.

1)  I am thankful for knowing where all the speed traps are while I'm out and about.  They were insalled all over our county right after Obama got in office.  I know it is a local thing, but I believe Obama's presidency motivated the county to put them up.  I pass them going in and out of our town, driving my daughter to Religious Education, and driving to the Maryland football games.  I know exactly where to monitor my speed extra carefully.

2)  I am so grateful for the continuation of our little homeschool co-op this year.  We are much smaller and no longer at the Church.  This year we hold classes at eachother's houses and it is working out very nicely.  It is such a joy to be able to spend time with these other homeschool families.

3)  I am thankful for leftover tailgate food.  There is nothing like the taste of barbeque flavored meat that can just be re-heated in the microwave.

4)  I am grateful that my daughter was able to spend some time with her friend the other day.  Her friend's family is Lebonese  and it is a tradition to call other adults 'Aunt' and 'Uncle.'  Her friend is calling me Aunt Eileen.  I don't have any siblings with any kids, but now I can finally be an Aunt!

5)  I am so thankful to be able to teach the kindergarten boys the mysteries of the rosary and see them pray a decade together.  They are so adorable as they learn the Our Father and Hail Mary prayers.

Jeopardy Game for History (L. 1-4)

If you are teaching middle school history to a homeschool class, here are some questions you can use during a jeopardy game.  We are using Volume II - The Civil War to the 21st Century, ALL AMERICAN HISTORY - Uniting America's Story, Piece by Piece by Celeste W. Rakes from Bright Idea Press.  It is a full year's curriculum in 32 weekly lessons with a great Activity Book for the students.  This is only the beginning of the year and is for Lessons 1 through 4 only.

There are five categories for the jeopardy game:  Laws, Vocabulary, Presidents, Battles, Famous People

Laws:
1)  Where and/or when did this arrangement between the North and South occur:  a) To satisfy the North, the importation of slaves would be illegal after 1808.  b) To satisfy the South, slave owning would be allowed and the South could count slaves in determining its number of representatives in Congress, each slave being worth 3/5 of a white man.  Answer:  Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia 1787. (This is additional information I found from another resource.)

2)  What and when was the law called that made this arrangement between the North and the South:  a) Missouri was admitted as a slave state, balanced by Maine's admission as a free state.  b) Slavery was excluded from the Louisiana territory north of the latitude line 36  30' and permitted south of it.  Answer:  Missouri Compromise of 1820

3)  Law that permitted slave owners to hunt down run-a-way slaves?  Answer: Fugitive Slave Laws

4)  Which law a) rejected the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and b) made the issue of slavery a matter of popular sovereignty (changing it from a moral issue to one that could be settled by a vote)?  Answer:  Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854

5)  What/When was the law called that made these arrangements between the North and South:  a) California was admitted as a free state.  b) New Mexico territory was organized w/o restriction on slavery with the provision that when applying for statehood, the territory "shall be received into the Union w/ or w/o slavery, as their Constitution may prescribe at the time of their admission.  c) Fugitive Slave Laws were tightened.  d) Slave trade was abolished in the District of Columbia  Answer: Compromise of 1850

5)  Believed slavery was immoral, but nevertheless believed Congress had no Constitutional rights to abolish slavery where it already existed and that the Abolitionist Movement must proceed carefully.  Issued the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address.  He was also the first Republican President and was assasinated.  Answer:  Lincoln

Battles:
1) Confederate Beauregard and his troops wanted a total and dramatic victory and fired the first shot of the Civil War.  Answer:  Siege of Fort Sumter

2) After this Confederate victory the Lincoln administration realized that the war would not be over in 90 days but would be long and costly.  Training Union troops became a priority.  Answer:  First Battle of Bull Run or Battle of Manassas

4)  Name(s) of 1 of/or 2 moderate abolitionist leaders who did not call for an immediate and total end of slavery because they could foresee the great disruption that would result.  One (Weld) founded anti-slavery societies through out New England and the other (Adams) was the first leader in Congress who introduced petitions calling for the abolition of slavery.  Answer:  Theodore Weld and/or John Quincy Adams

5)  Slave who tried to claim that his temporary residency in free territory had made him free upon his return to slave territory.  Answer:  Dred Scott

Eileen is Grateful

I have been so overwhelmed with planning curriculum and getting everyone back to school and college.  Please forgive me for not being able to participate in this great meme for a while.  As you know, Judy's blog has a great meme where we can list the things we are thankful for.  Just click on her name to participate.  Here are mine for this week:

1)  I am grateful for this moment of peace and quiet on this Saturday morning (better late than never) to be able to ponder and share about my last week.

2)  I am thankful that my writing class went well this past week.  I am also teaching the Kindergarteners some prayers.  My heart just absolutely melts when I see and hear them trying to recite a decade of the rosary.  They are so adorable!

3)  Finally, my carpool arrangements for my high schooler are set for the year.  I am very thankful for this.  I was so worried and unable to plan effectively because I wasn't hearing anything.  At the last minute, plans finally were set in place.  Talk about stress.

4)  I am grateful that my older sons are safely back to college and settled in their dorms.  Also, for the fact that one of their dorms is located near the Catholic Student Center!

5)  I am thankful for a husband that has similar political views!  Sorry-some other views just seem to be totally annoying.

Great Picture Books

Here are more great picture books I read with my five year old:

1)  A Weekend with Wendel by Kevin Henkes

This is a wonderful story about a mouse named Wendell who has not learned his manners yet.  He stays the weekend at a friends house and the family experiences some difficult and humerous encounters with Wendell.  Wendell learns a valuable lesson in the end and the family is releived that he has to return home.  It is a good story to introduce youngsters to choose civility in encountering any difficult peers.

2)  Sophie's Window by Holly Keller

A great story about a bird who learns to fly with some difficulty.  The bird miraculously meets a friendly dog who helps him return to safety until he learns to fly on his own.  They become great friends after the dog reaches out to help the bird.

3)  Little Rabbit Lost by Harry Horse

If you are ever worried about your little one getting lost in a crowd, this is a good story to help your child learn to stay near mom.  Little Rabbit wants to be grown up too fast and learns the hard way that he has to wait until he is a little bigger.

4)  One Fine Day by Nonny Hogrogian

The fox learns that he should not take things that do not belong to him by encountering some unwanted strenuous activity to have something returned to him.  A great lesson to reinforce the seventh commandment, "Thou shalt not steal."

5)  The Caterpillar and the Polliwog by Jack Kent

The caterpillar is very excited because she knows she will one day become something else and tells everyone she encounters.  The polliwog learns he will become something else too and is lead to believe that it is also a butterfly.  At the end of the story, the polliwog is delighted to learn that he becomes a frog.  This story introduces children to the concept of metamorphisis in a fun way.

Great Picture Book

I just wanted to tell everyone about a wonderful picture book I've been enjoying with my five year old this summer.  It is called Five-Minute Devotions for Children, Celebrating God's World as a Family by Pamela Kennedy.  There are 21 animals/insects your child will learn about along with a short biblical commentary and bible verse to go along with the animals behavior/character/situation.  We just read about spiders today learning how they spin their webs and kill and wait for their prey.  The bible commentary revealed that telling the truth is the best way to stay out of the web of lies and a reference to psalm 34:13.  Each page has a delightful picture with simple questions to keep them engaged and test their listening.  You can purchase this book from Amazon.

Eileen is Grateful

It is time to participate at Judy's blog in a Thankful Woman's Blessings to express our gratitude for the good things that have happened to us in our walk with the Lord during this past week.  Just click on Judy's name to participate.

 1)  I am so grateful that I was able to participate in our parish woman's group today for part of their meeting.  It is such a joy to come together with other Catholic women in prayer and fellowship.  I am also thankful that I will be able to participate in their meeting more often during the school year because our co-op is being held on a different day this year.  My daughter will also be able to help babysit for all the moms and make a little money.  She has expressed a desire to do this.

2)  I am thankful that my oldest daughter was able to teach four classes of swim lessons to little ones this week.  It is very good money and she enjoys working with most of the children.  There are a couple who do not listen well but it is a good learning experience for her.  My husband and I coach her on ways to approach any difficulties that come up and she seems to be doing a very good job.  This is another reason why I have been unable to blog much lately.  I thought all the driving for swim team would be over by now.  Now I drive for swim lessons.  Oh well - it is a beneficial sacrifice.  I do not like feeling like a taxi service.

3)  I am grateful that my two college sons returned from New York City safe and sound.  They took a trip to visit their good friend that goes to Fordham University and chose to stay and work there over the summer.

4)  I am thankful for such a kind Religious Ed. Director who is letting my seventh grade daughter continue to participate in the Confirmation program on a sporadic basis.  We will be doing most of the work together at home and she will occasionally attend the classes.

5)  I am thankful that my three youngest children and I were able to visit my mom in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia on Monday.  It is an hour and a half away and we have been so busy that we haven't seen her for a long while.  It was a joy to see her as I know we will get too busy again during the school year.  She does not like to drive much so cannot make it down our way often.

My Homeschool Week

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

It's time for The Homeschool Mother's Journal where we can share what has happened in our week together and discuss progress made for our homeschooling efforts.  Just click on this name to join in.

In my life this week.....I'm glad to say the Swim Team is finally over.  My husband and I attended the last meet together to see our daughters compete.  I was also able to bring my high school daughter to the eye doctor to receive an updated perscription and order a years supply of contact lenses for her.  My college sons have been able to visit friends on their days off and seem to keep pretty busy.  It is a joy to have them home.  I cook, wash dishes, and do laundry more but it is all worth while.  Their little brother loves to be with them often.  I was also able to get my daughter some more shirts and a skirt for her school uniform.  She goes to Catholic high school and was homeschooled through ninth grade.

In our homeschool week.....I finally received my planner this week and will be able to start putting some order into our schedule.  We will continue to do Math and English first thing in the morning four days a week.  Our Co-op will be on Tuesdays this year.  This means that History, Science, and Writing homework will be done on Wednesdays and/or Thursdays only.  I still have to schedule ballet class and Religious Education for Confirmation into the schedule.  I'll be working on this for the rest of the summer because I have to design a curriculum for the History class I'm teaching at our Co-op.

My daughter was busy with Math corrections this past week and my five year old completed some journal entries and we read lots of library books.

Places we're going/people we're seeing.....This weekend is the Swim Team Banquet which is always aloth of fun.  We will be going over to our good friends house afterwards for a fun gathering.  I will also have my good friend (my son's girlfriend's mother) visit me with her exchange students from Korea the following day.  We will have danish and coffee in the morning at my house.  It will be nice to see my son's girlfriend and her family.  They are so sweet.

Next week will be very busy as we go to a cake decorating class at Joann's with some good friends, bring my dog to the vet to receive her shots, have a meeting with the Religious Education director, have our Co-op Pool Party, and go to my son's godmothers bridal shower.

My favorite thing this week was.....reading books to my five year old.

What's working/not working for us.....I need to find a computer technician to help keep my computers serving me effectively (just kidding).  I have some things that need to be downloaded to pdf files and for some reason it is slow getting fixed.

Questions/thoughts I have,,,,,Do you bring homeschooling on vacation with you?

Things I'm working on.....A timeline for the History class I'm teaching.

I'm reading.....Embracing the Kingdom - A Bible Study on Conversion by Rich Cleveland

I'm cooking.....My daughters made Creamy Pesto Chicken Pasta for dinner tonight.

I'm praying for.....My daughters to have good luck with the four children they are babysitting for tonight.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share....."Little by little, the cotton thread becomes a cloth."
